You can now transform your desk into Cape Canaveral.
Luxury watchmaker MB&F collaborated with premium writing tool company Maison Caran d’Ache to create The Astrograph: a limited-edition pen shaped like a rocket ship.
Inspired by MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser’s childhood dream of exploring space, the sleek, curved instrument is accented with a checkered patterned made from anthracite lacquer. Its ergonomic body—thoughtfully designed to fit comfortably in one’s hand—unscrews to unveil a pen inside the “fuselage.”
The fanciful work showcases an innovative mechanism inspired by penknives: a small lever disguised as the rocket’s entryway, used to activate the lowering of the three stabilizer legs that allow it to rest fully upright.
The most complex writing tool ever designed in the Caran d’Ache workshops, each piece requires more than 500 manual operations to manufacture. “Developing Astrograph was truly challenging,” MB&F said in a statement. Four years of planning were necessary to perfect the technical concept, with the final model taking an entire year to develop. In honor of the 99 new components specially made for the new design, only 99 fountain pens and roller pens will be released.
The Astrograph is available in three finishes—high-gloss rhodium (as a fountain pen), sandblasted matte rhodium (as a fountain or roller pen), and anthracite ruthenium (as a fountain pen).
While the roller is fitted with a Caran d’Ache cartridge, the fountain pen showcases a rhodium-plated, 18-karat gold nib and has an ink pump (though may also be used with cartridges).
Each of the instruments is numbered and packaged in a specially devised box made to resemble a launch pad.
And every “spacecraft” comes with a mini magnetic astronaut figurine that can attach to any part of the instrument—so it’s always ready for lift off.
