How to Make Chocolate Ice Cream In A Bag
Gather your supplies:
- 2 (or 3) plastic resealable bags (we used 1 quart size and 2 gallon size)
- Enough ice to fill the larger bag
- 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/2 tsp sugar
- 2 tbl hot chocolate mix (we used unsweetened)
- 6 tbl kosher salt
First combine the cream and the hot chocolate. I mixed it together using a whisk. Then put the cream mixture into the quart size plastic bag, and add the vanilla and sugar. Seal the bag, being careful to press the air out as well.
Add the ice to the gallon sized plastic bag, filling it about 3/4 of the way full. Add the salt, and give it a few shakes. Then make room for the bag containing the cream mixture in the middle. Seal the bag, pressing out the extra air. I like to use 2 bags, because my helpers get very energetic in their shaking when making ice cream in a bag. This way the ice cubes (usually) don’t wind up flying everywhere.
Then we bring the bags outside, and shake, shake, shake! It’s fun to play dancing music and just get crazy with it. My kids pass the bag between them, throw it up in the air, dance with it over their heads – pretty much they do everything to keep that bag moving! I also get in there and make sure I give it a few good shakes every minute or so.
It usually takes about 10 minutes. If you had very diligent shakers, that might cut down on the time.
You can also double bag the ice cream – but I find this leads to longer shaking times, so it’s not ideal. My kids throw the bag in the air, and even kick it, and we’ve rarely punctured the interior bag. Although nothing is as disappointing as salty ice cream, so it may be worth using that extra bag!
